Miss Higgins selected Charlie Broadbent and Kieran Goulding from Year 11 to take part in a First World War battlefields tour, as a reward for their enthusiasm in history lessons. The tour was fully funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and provided a variety of perspectives and insights into the history of the Western Front. They were led by an expert from the Guild of Battlefield Guides, also a serving solider accompanied the trip to provide a contrast to serving as a solider 100 years ago.
Kieran and Charlie reported that, 'we really enjoyed the trip. We learnt about the war from different perspectives and found it interesting to discover how the war affected ordinary people as well. After looking at the many memorials we had a chance to think about how remembrance is still as important 100 years later as it was at the time.' Charlie's favourite session on the trip was finding out about the tanks and how they were first used in combat.
